Do\'s & Don\'ts for Parish Websites

by Fr John Parsells Orthodox Web Solutions

Do's:

  1. Keep your
domain name short so it can fit on printed material, but descriptive so it
identifies your church. If possible, use
    .org.
  2. Use light
backgrounds and dark text - standard colors.
  3. Make sure the
home page highlights parish life - recent and upcoming events, service
schedule, photos - keeping the welcome message very brief.
  4. Link to your
    diocese and/or jurisdiction website.
  5. Offer a
    printable version.

Don'ts:

  1. Don't use
background music - have a choir page if you want to have music.
  2. Don't use a
free service (hosting, counters, or otherwise) with advertisements.
  3. Don't use
offsite email addresses, create email forwarders or new mailboxes
    @yourparish.org.
  4. Don't list too
many pages on your main menu. Group like
    pages together.
  5. Don't use large
images, use thumbnails which when clicked display the image full size.
